Aerosol Technology

Subject division

The subect division deals with all processes and products in the field of aerosol technology. This starts with the understanding and control of particle formation by nucleation and condensation up to the conception and operation of reactors and plants for the technical or industrial production of functional particles and particle layers. In addition to particle formation and growth in the gas phase, the targeted adjustment of structural and functional particle properties such as size, shape, composition, surface properties, and the defined deposition of aerosol particles on substrates and into suspensions are considered.

Examples of interesting processes are those for particle synthesis in the gas phase such as flame synthesis, flame spray pyrolysis, microwave and plasma synthesis, laser ablation, as well as hot wall and UV synthesis. The products typical for the field of aerosol technology range from carbon black, titanium dioxide and silica as bulk products to special powders such as nanoscale multi-component multi-shell structures. Applications of such functional particles can be found, for example, in the chemical industry, in the field of materials synthesis, food technology and the life sciences.
